Baazi set the tone for the wave of crime films that were to come out of Bollywood, during the 50s and the 60s. This second offering from the Navketan banner, was the debut directorial film for Guru Dutt, who went on to become one of Hindi cinemas premier directors.
The film was also a launching pad for several talents who went on to make a name for themselves Dev Anand the ideal actor for crime thrillers like Jaal, Pocketmaar, C. I. D, Nau Do Gyarah, Kaala Bazaar, and Jaali Note, to name a few, lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi, choreographer Zohra Sehgal, playback singer Geeta Roy (later known as Geeta Dutt), the comedian Johny Walker.
Two songs from this film stand out as hits, Tadbeer se bigdi hui taqdeer bana le a ghazal set to a western beat and the svelte, seductive number, Suno gajar kya gaaye both by Geeta Dutt.

Description

Ajay (Dharmendra) a police officer is in love with Elizabeth DSilva (Waheeda Rehman), a vivacious young damsel. While Lizs uncle sit over her fathers wealth making life are miserable for Liz, it is only her marriage that would help do away with her uncles hold on her wealth as per her fathers will. However, young Liz wishes that the uncle were dead, not dead in the real sense of it, but dead enough to loose the purse string and let her enjoy the wealth.
But wishes, sometimes, have an uncanny way of coming true. And to Lizs horror her uncle did die… and the death was sudden and swift. When Ajay in response to Lizs frantic phone call drove to her house, he found Liz had fainted away due to the shock of this unwarranted tragedy. The local doctor pronounced the cause of the uncles death as sudden cardiac failure. With the help of the Father of the local Church. Ajay interred the body of Lizs uncle to the graveyard.
A few days later, a man approaches inspector Ajay to help him find his missing son. The photograph of this son, when produced by the man, startled the wits out of Ajay. It was the photograph of Lizs uncle
Ajay was intrigued! Did he help bury someone elses body? Hurriedly the grave was dug, but………. THERE IS NO BODY!
