Crime does not pay may well be the moral of this story, which deals with the rise and fall of a notorious dacoit and killer Kala Ghoda.

The story revolves around Malti, a woman, who ditched by her husband ram, in a fit of rage exchanges her child with that of her husbands second wife. Thus, her son Ratan grows up as the legal heir while Rams son from his second wife Amar, a handsome and bold young man grows up as the son of the maidservant Malti. Amar, who cannot phantom the reason as to why his mother devoted herself to the rich brat Ratan, disguise himself as an ugly munim to keep Ratan happy. However, fate has a different guise in hold for these three people. Rattan who is betrothed to Roopa the glamorous and lovely daughter of Captain Suresh, a rich timber merchant however falls in love with Amar on one of those occasions when he is not in his guise. As a grown-up young man, Ratan begins to indulge in loot, dacoity, kidnapping, killing etc. under the guise of Kala Ghoda. No one suspects Kala Ghoda to be the Ratan other than Malti, Ratans True mother.

When Ratan comes to about Roopas love for Amar he imprisons, Malti and compels Amar to accept Kala Ghodas crimes as his own.
